Dr Fitzgerald's areas of interest include HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis prevention and therapeutic clinical trials, operational studies of HIV/AIDS and TB service programs in Haiti and Tanzania, and evaluations of new diagnostics. He is conducting a randomized study to determine the optimal time to start antiretroviral therapy in resource-poor countries; studies of HPV related cervical cancer, and studies of new TB diagnostics. Other interests include improving informed consent and empirical studies to inform ethical guidelines for the conduct of clinical research in resource-poor countries.
