Research
Dr. Schackman has a distinguished record of continuous funding from NIH/NIDA and is currently beginning his ninth year as PI of the Center for Health Economics of Treatment Interventions for Substance Use Disorder, HCV, and HIV (CHERISH), a NIDA-supported multi-institutional P30 national center of excellence. He also leads NIDA-funded R01 and U01 research projects and was recently awarded another modeling and economic resource center grant from NIDA as part of the NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-Term) initiative. Dr. Schackman has collaborated with NIH-supported clinical trials and simulation modeling teams to undertake policy-relevant studies examining the economic implications of integrating HIV, HCV, and substance use treatment and the cost-effectiveness of alternative treatments for opioid use disorder in different clinical settings. He has also made important scientific advances in measuring quality of life related to HIV, HCV, and opioid use disorder.
Current and recent projects include assessing the feasibility and acceptability of HIV, HCV, and opioid use disorder services in syringe service programs nationally; optimizing naloxone distribution for prevention of fatal opioid overdoses in New York City, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island; economic evaluation of the HEALing Communities Study of community interventions to reduce incidence of fatal overdoses in four states; and simulation modeling to optimize allocation of public health program resources to achieve Ending the HIV Epidemic targets in Miami.
