My research program aims to elucidate the direct and intergenerational effects of substance use disorders, as well as the role of drug, public health, Medicaid, and child welfare policies in modifying these effects.

Research

Dr. Meinhofer studies the healthcare, health, and foster care outcomes of children and families affected by parental substance use. To examine these associations, she relies on quasi-experimental research designs, conceptual frameworks grounded in economic theory, and large data sources such as Medicaid insurance claims, hospital discharge records, and nationally representative surveys. Dr. Meinhofer is the Principal Investigator of several federal and private foundation grants, including from the National Institute on Drug Abuse K01 Career Development Award, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Gerber Foundation, and the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts.

Bio

Dr. Meinhofer earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras in 2009 and a Ph.D. in economics at Brown University in 2016
