Social Security Number (SSN)

The SSN is a 9-digit personal identification number issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and it is NOT a work authorization. It is used by employees and employers for tax reporting purposes. Once you receive an SSN, the number is yours for life. Make sure you keep your SSN card in a safe place and do not lose your card. Replacing your card is tricky.

TRAVEL

Overview

F-1 students are advised to plan any travels in advance to ensure that you have the proper documentation to re-enter the United States, as well as to avoid missing classes and other required academic activities. You should carry these douments with you and not in your checked luggage, as you must present these documents to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the U.S. port of entry.

24-MONTH STEM OPT EXTENSION

Students who graduated from a degree program in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields may be eligible to apply for an addition 24 months of OPT.

OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING

What is Optional Pratical Training (OPT)?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 students to obtain work experience related to their major field of study. Your work must be related to your major in the medical sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine. You may apply for OPT during and/or after you are enrolled as a full-time student for one academic year. Students are eligible for 12 months of OPT for each higher level of study (e.g.

CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING

What is Curricular Practical Training (CPT)?

CPT is defined by federal regulations to be “internships, cooperative training programs, or work-study programs which are part of an established curriculum” –– 8 CFR 274a.12(b)(6)(iv). Note that CPT employment may not delay completion of your academic program.

Dr. Rachel Orleans has achieved a number of firsts in her family: She was the first to graduate from college, the first to earn a Master in Public Health and now, with her graduation May 30 from Weill Cornell Medical College, the first to become a doctor.

Outstanding Students Celebrated at Convocation

On the eve of their commencement, students from Weill Cornell Medical College and Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences were recognized for their outstanding achievements.

Some 75 medical and graduate students received special awards, prizes, certificates and the Weill Cornell seal during three ceremonies on May 29 in Uris Auditorium and Griffis Faculty Club. The awards acknowledge the students' exceptional academic achievement, scholarship, research, teaching and service. The ceremony also honored other students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Dr. Katharine Hsu Wins Weill Cornell Graduate School Alumni Award

Dr. Katharine Hsu, M.D. ’94, Ph.D. ’93, professor of medicine and attending physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, has been awarded the Weill Cornell Graduate School Alumni Award of Distinction.

Since 1997, graduate school alumni have been recognized with this award for their outstanding contributions to biomedical research in education, focusing on science and scholarship, leadership, mentoring and teaching, and service to society.

Biomedical Business Plan Challenge Nurtures Weill Cornell Medicine Entrepreneurs

Dr. Jyotishman Pathak, the Frances and John L. Loeb Professor of Medical Informatics, and chief of the Division of Health Informatics in the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research at Weill Cornell Medicine, wanted to improve the way clinicians treat the more than 1.5 million U.S. women who suffer from mood and anxiety disorders related to pregnancy and childbirth.
