About the Keynote Speaker

Throughout his research career, Dr. Kevan Shokat, a leader in the field of chemical genetics, has developed chemical methods for elucidating the roles of various enzymes in cellular signal transduction pathways—with a particular focus on protein kinases. Dr. Shokat uses a combination of chemical synthesis and protein engineering to create uniquely traceable and regulatable kinases, allowing the function of over 100 different kinases to be uncovered across all disease areas, including oncology, metabolism, and infectious disease.

Dr. Shokat is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF), and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley). Dr. Shokat received his B.S. in Chemistry from Reed College and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at UC Berkeley with Professor Peter Schultz. He then completed his post-doctoral work at Stanford University with Professor Chris Goodnow. Dr. Shokat has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Pew Scholar Award, a Searle Scholar Award, the Protein Society’s Young Investigator Award, and the Eli Lilly Award.  In addition, Dr. Shokat holds several prestigious memberships; he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 2010, the National Academy of Medicine in 2010, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011. Dr. Shokat has successfully commercialized discoveries from his laboratory through co-founding several biotechnology companies including, Cellular Genomics (acquired by Gilead), Intellikine (acquired by Takeda), Araxes, Kura, eFFECTOR, Revolution Medicines and Mitokinin.
