Course Details

Course Director: M. Elizabeth Ross, MD, PhD

Semesters: Summer, Fall II and Spring II

Course Description: Working under the supervision of 1 or more supervisors/mentors, students will complete an independent study-thesis project focusing on a genetics or counseling-related topic of interest. The project will involve the design of a research study (either quantitative or qualitative).

1.     A systematic literature review that is a suitable foundation for original empirical research,

2.     A formal proposal for an original research study, and

3.     An oral defense of the final project design before the student’s Master’s Thesis Special Committee.

Course Goal: A requirement for a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling in the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences (WCGS) is the successful completion and oral defense of an independent study dissertation project encompassing an area appropriate to the theory and practice of genetic counseling. The thesis project prepares the student for participation in biomedical research as a genetic counselor. The purpose of the thesis is to give the student practical insight into the procedural steps involved in the design, implementation, and interpretation of an investigation pertinent to the student’s chosen field.
